Frequently Asked Questions

How is carbon sequestration accounted for?

Carbon sequestration or carbon sinking is accounted for through the Land Use sector. Snapshot calculates greenhouse gases emitted or sequestered through land use change. Data for land use change is sourced from the Department of Environment and Energy Land Use Bioregion (IBRA7) and calculates emissions from the following forest clearing (forestland to cropland) and afforestation (grassland to forestland). The impacts of ongoing sequestration from existing forestland such as National Parks is not currently included.

For more information on land use change calculations please see the Methodology document which can be downloaded from the Resources page.
