Fugitive emissions are the gases unintentionally released during the extraction, processing, storage, transport, and discharge of fossil fuels. Fugitive emissions from coal mining, and oil and gas production account for about 8% of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Australia’s National Greenhouse Accounts provide fugitive emissions data for coal mining and oil and natural gas. Although some state level data and more granular data exists, this is typically not available for the majority of states and subsectors due to privacy reasons.
Fugitive emissions are all scope 1 emissions.
